The EU Council adopted its negotiating position on a proposal to limit consumption of products linked to deforestation or forest degradation. The position sets mandatory due diligence for operators who place or export palm oil, beef, timber, coffee, cocoa and soy, along with derived products.
It also creates a benchmarking system that classifies countries by deforestation risk.
Mandatory due diligence and country risk benchmarking could raise costs and reduce EU market access for soy and palm oil from higher-risk origins. The effect on prices is gradual and depends on final adoption.
