Iowa ethanol plants sold product at an estimated average of $2.485 per gallon in July 1-22, down from $2.71 in May and $2.70 in June. Plants operated at estimated losses of $0.21 per gallon in early July, and DDGS prices fell to about $203.50 per ton from $230 in June.
Losing ethanol margins can lead plants to slow or idle production, which reduces DDGS output. Lower DDGS prices reflect softer feed-ingredient demand and make the product cheaper for buyers.
