The Army Corps of Engineers received $829.1 million from the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act for the Navigation and Ecosystem Sustainability Program on the Mississippi River. Funding will go toward a new 1,200-foot lock chamber at Lock 25 near Alton, Illinois, and fish passage work at Lock 22.
Improved lock capacity on the upper Mississippi should ease barge bottlenecks over time, which can narrow barge freight spreads, though construction timelines mean little near-term price effect.
