Wardha district in Maharashtra has received less rain this year, with soil moisture, well levels and irrigation storage all declining. The agriculture department has advised farmers to plan rabi sowing around limited irrigation and favour low-water crops such as gram, safflower, mustard, linseed, lentil and rabi sorghum.
Weak rainfall and reduced irrigation shift Indian rabi acreage toward pulses and oilseeds and away from water-intensive grains, which could tighten local coarse grain supplies and support sorghum prices.
