Japan's Finance Minister Shunichi Suzuki said the government's currency interventions have been stealth operations designed to maximise their impact. Japan spent 6.35 trillion yen (about $42.7 billion) on intervention in October to support the yen.
The yen was trading near 148.70 per dollar, below the 150 threshold.
Yen-buying intervention strengthens the yen against the dollar, which lowers the yen cost of dollar-priced imports such as feed ingredients and energy. The scale of the spending also signals that Tokyo may step in again, limiting further dollar gains.
