The African Development Bank approved $73.81 million on 9 December for the Sudan Emergency Wheat Production Project. The project aims to more than double Sudan's wheat output from about 630,000 tonnes through certified seed, fertilizer and extension support.
Sudan imports 60-70% of its wheat, mainly from Russia and Ukraine.
The project is a small, long-term effort to reduce Sudan's import dependence and will not move global wheat prices in the near term. Sudan's dependence on Black Sea wheat remains a demand factor.
