Urner Barry says US shell egg prices have stayed high for most of 2022 because of the HPAI outbreak, with 43.3 million table egg layers depopulated through December 25. Analysts estimate a 15-16% price rise for each 1% of layers lost and expect large Midwest prices to decline starting January 2023.
Egg prices are highly sensitive to layer losses, and expected January declines indicate easing wholesale pressure even as HPAI is expected to continue into 2023.
