Iowa State data show the average return over operating costs at a typical dry-mill ethanol plant was 34.64 cents per gallon, down more than $1 from a year earlier. Iowa ethanol averaged $2.44 per gallon and corn averaged $6.82 per bushel, about $1.10 higher year on year.
Thinner ethanol margins from high corn costs can slow plant grind and reduce DDGS output over time. Corn strength is the main cost pressure on the ethanol sector.
