Astral Foods, one of South Africa's largest poultry producers, says its cost to produce chicken now exceeds the selling price by at least R2 per kilogram. Load shedding has cut broiler placements by at least 12 million and created slaughter backlogs that increase feed consumption per bird.
Production cuts from power outages reduce local chicken supply and feed demand, and analysts expect retail chicken prices to rise. Imported feed ingredients may see some additional demand.
