Texas A&M researcher Keerti Rathore said the cotton variety TAM66274 has cottonseed gossypol reduced by up to 97%, to about 350 ppm, below FDA and FAO/WHO safety thresholds. He argued that wider adoption could improve protein supply for non-ruminants and human nutrition.
The variety was deregulated by USDA-APHIS in 2018 and cleared by FDA in 2019.
Lower-gossypol cottonseed could make more cottonseed meal usable in poultry and swine rations, adding supply over time and modestly pressuring cottonseed meal prices. Near-term impact is limited because adoption is still early.
