USDA's Economic Research Service reports that HPAI outbreaks cut US egg-laying hen numbers by more than 43 million since February 2022, with two loss waves. Egg inventories were 29% lower at the end of December 2022 than at the start of the year, pushing wholesale prices to record highs.
Lower layer flocks keep shell egg supply tight into 2023, supporting feed demand for layers and reinforcing high egg prices until flocks rebuild.
