From 1 January 2023 the Panama Canal applies disruption charges to non-self-propelled vessels such as dead tows and dead ships, on top of tolls. Charges range from $15,000 for low-impact disruptions to $250,000 for high-impact cases on neopanamax vessels.
The fees raise the cost of moving bulk cargo through the canal, a minor added cost for grain and oilseed shipments that could slightly support freight prices on affected routes.
