Malaysia's Plantation and Commodities Minister warned that EU deforestation rules will reduce palm oil exports to the EU and could weaken global sales. The EU imported 1.47 million tonnes of Malaysian palm oil in 2022, down 10.5% year on year.
The minister called the rules a trade barrier and said the government will counter the campaign.
Expected loss of EU demand for Malaysian palm oil adds bearish pressure on palm oil prices, especially if buyers switch away from non-compliant supply. Reduced EU purchases would leave more product available for other markets.
After 400 past bearish policy events, Palm Oil moved a median -0.0% over 5 sessions (49% higher; middle half -1.3% to +1.1%), and +0.2% over 20.
