Cargill announced an investment of A$73 million to upgrade its Newcastle, Narrabri and Footscray oilseed crushing facilities, with completion expected by May 2024. The Narrabri plant, mothballed since 2018, will be restarted as a cottonseed dehulling site.
Cottonseed meats will then be processed at Newcastle.
More crushing capacity in Australia means more canola and cottonseed meal entering the domestic and export feed supply. The effect on prices is gradual because the capacity will not be fully operating until 2024.
