Direct cash cattle trade was quiet at midday, with southern live cattle trading at $165 to $171 and Kansas sales mostly at $167, which was $4 higher than the previous week. Northern dressed deals ranged from $265 to $275.50, and the weekly slaughter total was 651,000 head, 12,000 above 2022.
Cash cattle prices rose sharply on tight supplies, which supports live and feeder cattle futures. Slaughter running above last year's pace is a modest offset.
