reported that a section of the roughly 100 km conveyor belt used by Morocco to move phosphate rock from a mine to the coast was apparently damaged by an explosion on May 20, 2023. Video evidence shows the belt torn apart, though WSRW could not independently verify the footage.
Neither Polisario, OCP nor Morocco had commented.
If confirmed, damage to the key export conveyor could disrupt phosphate rock shipments, which tightens supply for importers such as India, Mexico and New Zealand.
