Saskatchewan exporters say it is too early to predict Chinese sanctions after the expulsion of a Chinese diplomat, but they are concerned given China's history of trade retaliation. Saskatchewan shipped a record $5.1 billion of goods to China in 2022, and a 2019 Chinese canola ban cost growers over $1 billion.
A possible Chinese ban on Canadian canola or other farm goods would reduce demand for Canadian oilseeds and meal, but no restrictions are in place yet so the price effect is speculative.
