ILWU Canada served 72-hour strike notice to the BC Maritime Employers Association, with a longshore strike at Vancouver and Prince Rupert set for Saturday. Grain and oilseed handling at port terminals is exempt under the Canada Labour Code.
Because grain vessels are exempt, the direct impact on grain and oilseed exports is limited, but general container disruption could raise ocean freight costs and delay other farm exports.
