USDA's Grain Transportation Report for July 6, 2023 presents weekly grain bid summaries and rail indicators. It reports that grain carloads for the four weeks ending June 24 were down 8% week-on-week, 25% year-on-year and 23% below the 3-year average.
It also covers secondary railcar market bids and tariff rail rates for BNSF.
Weaker rail grain loadings point to slower movement of grain to export and processing points, which can widen inland basis discounts. Secondary rail pricing shows the cost of getting grain moved, which feeds into delivered feed-ingredient costs.
