Clemson University and Cotton Incorporated received a USDA grant to use molecular tools to improve oil content in upland cotton and develop germplasm with higher cottonseed oil and resistance to fusarium wilt. The project aims to raise the value of both lint and seed over the long term.
This is early-stage breeding research with no near-term effect on cottonseed supply or prices. It signals a possible longer-run increase in cottonseed oil yield that could eventually add to meal supply.
