GOED's managing director outlines the global fish oil supply situation after Peru cancelled its first 2023 anchovy fishing season in the North Central region in June. Lower 2022 crude oil output and customers drawing on existing stocks have left inventories tight.
Other omega-3 sources such as salmon, tuna, cod liver, krill, algae and GM canola oil are cited as partial alternatives.
Peruvian anchovy oil is the main source of omega-3 supplement oil, so the cancelled season tightens supply and supports fish oil prices. Tight fishmeal and fish oil supply can also lift feed ingredient costs for buyers.
