Bank Negara Malaysia and the Bank of Thailand announced an expansion of the ringgit-baht local currency settlement framework effective December 1. Eligible users now include Malaysians and Thais residing in either country, with simplified foreign exchange documentation.
The framework builds on earlier expansions and the recently launched cross-border QR payment link.
Local-currency settlement reduces reliance on the US dollar for bilateral trade between Malaysia and Thailand, a marginal change for feed and grain pricing. The effect on agricultural commodity prices is negligible.
