Peru's Ministry of Production published a resolution authorising the second anchovy season to start at midnight on 26 October, with a quota of 1.682 million tons after exploratory fishing from 21 October. The first season in June 2023 was cancelled because El Niño raised sea temperatures and produced many juvenile anchovies.
The cancellation raised omega-3 production costs, which has pushed up ingredient and consumer prices.
Restarting the season relieves the fishmeal and fish oil shortage that followed the cancelled June season, though the lower quota means supply will stay tighter than normal.
