Peru's Ministry of Production authorised the start of the second anchovy fishing season in the north-central area, beginning 26 October 2023. The quota is 1.682 million tonnes, 26% below last year's allocation.
Produce says the quota keeps fishing within sustainability limits and that more than 5 million tonnes of spawning anchovy will remain at season end.
A 26% smaller anchovy quota cuts fishmeal and fish oil supply from a key source, which supports fishmeal prices and adds demand for substitute protein meals.
