Feed barley prices in Canada have fallen by about $100 per tonne since the start of the calendar year despite Agriculture Canada's estimate of 2023-24 supply at 8.75 million tonnes, down 17 percent. Feeders have shifted to wheat, oats and imported U.S. corn, and China's removal of tariffs on Australian barley has reduced demand for Canadian barley.
Cheaper substitutes such as imported corn and wheat cap barley values, so feed buyers can source barley at lower cost while the broader grains complex stays under pressure.
