Indonesia's rupiah strengthened in early trade on Wednesday December 27 after US PCE inflation for November came in at 2.6% year on year, below the 2.8% consensus. Core PCE rose 0.1% month on month versus 0.2% expected, and was 3.2% annually against a 3.3% forecast.
The rupiah rose to Rp 15,422 per dollar.
Softer US inflation raises expectations of Federal Reserve rate cuts, weakening the dollar and supporting emerging-market currencies. For feed buyers, a weaker dollar tends to support dollar-priced commodities and can ease import costs for Indonesia.
After 1,637 past bearish macro events, US Dollar (Broad) moved a median -0.2% over 5 sessions (39% higher; middle half -0.6% to +0.3%), and -0.2% over 20.
