USDA data show 79.7 million domestic birds lost to bird flu since early 2022, with about one-fourth of those losses occurring in October through December 2023. Some 20.9 million birds were culled in that quarter, mostly egg-laying hens and turkeys.
Egg prices rose only marginally in 2023 and are forecast to fall 12% in 2024.
The large cumulative losses show how repeated outbreaks constrain poultry supply, but USDA's forecast of lower egg prices in 2024 suggests the market has absorbed much of the impact.
