ILWU Local 26 has authorized a strike by about 250 port watchmen at eight container terminals in Los Angeles and Long Beach when their contract extension expires. The watchmen represent about 2% of the ILWU workforce but serve terminals with 85% of Long Beach volume and 33% of Los Angeles volume.
Negotiations continue with federal mediators, and the deadline extension has not been formally confirmed.
Other ILWU members are expected to honor picket lines, so a strike could halt much of the West Coast container flow. That would tighten ocean freight capacity and push up export logistics costs for US feed and grain.
