The threatened strike by about 250 port watchmen at Los Angeles and Long Beach has been moved from Sunday 1 November to 5pm Pacific on Wednesday 4 November. Federal mediators have joined talks between the Pacific Maritime Association and ILWU Local 26.
The watchmen work at terminals handling about 85% of Long Beach cargo and 33% of Los Angeles cargo.
A walkout at terminals this large would delay US grain and feed exports and raise ocean freight costs for shippers. The deadline extension lowers near-term risk, but the strike threat keeps freight rates firm.
