Illinois Fertilizer and Chemical Association president Kevin Johnson told a soybean summit that fertilizer prices swing with many global factors, including weather, tariffs, sanctions, natural gas and crop prices. He said ammonia prices have moved sideways after rising from late-August lows, and that about 90% of global nutrients move across borders.
He noted the US ranks third in nitrogen and potash consumption and fourth in phosphate use.
Because US fertilizer supply depends heavily on imports and natural gas, global shocks pass quickly into domestic input costs. Sideways ammonia prices suggest no immediate price relief for crop producers.
