Peru's Ministry of Production authorized the first artisanal anchovy and white anchovy season of 2024 in the southern maritime area, from 16°00'S to the southern limit of Peru's maritime domain. The maximum catch limit is 251,000 tonnes, following a recommendation from IMARPE.
Only vessels holding permits for anchovy destined for indirect human consumption (fishmeal and fish oil) may fish.
Anchovy is the main raw material for fishmeal, a key protein ingredient in feed. A defined catch quota in southern Peru starts supply flow, which can ease fishmeal tightness if landings are strong, though the modest quota relative to demand limits the bearish effect.
