LeftField Commodity Research forecasts Canadian barley supplies of 10.7 to 11.7 million tonnes for 2024-25, well above the 2023-24 level of 9.65 million tonnes. The outlook assumes farmers plant about 6.6 million acres because feed and malt prices have fallen since Statistics Canada's survey.
Ample Canadian barley supplies are bearish for feed barley values and compete with corn and wheat in feed rations. Lower acreage expectations partly offset the supply overhang.
