Peru's production ministry set the first 2024 anchovy quota for the North-Center region at 2.475 million tons, starting April 16. That is more than double the 1.09 million tons of last year's first season, which was canceled because of El Niño.
IFFO reported that Peruvian-driven fishmeal output fell about 26% in the first two months of 2024.
A much larger Peruvian anchovy quota means more fishmeal supply later in 2024, which should ease fishmeal prices if the fleet lands the catch. Buyers should watch juvenile biomass and actual landings, since the quota only translates to supply if fish are caught.
