Reports say the Trump administration is pressuring Lithuania to reopen Klaipėda port to Belarusian potash exports despite EU sanctions, aiming to reduce US reliance on Canadian supply and lower fertilizer costs. If implemented, this would materially loosen … On the supply side, pre‑sanction Belarusian potash exports were on the order of 10–12 Mt/year.
Current constrained flows are well below that. Even a partial restoration of Klaipėda access could bring several million tonnes per year back into the seaborne market over time, loosening what has been a structurally tighter potash balance since 2021–22 sanctions.
Increased Belarusian supply would compete directly with Canadian (Nutrien), Russian and other producers, putting downward pressure on potash benchmark prices and, by extension, on compound NPK and blended fertilizer prices.
Washington is seeking to diversify away from Canadian potash, and any reopening would add Belarusian tonnage to world supply. Continued Lithuanian resistance keeps the proposal limited and supports current potash prices.
