UOB economist Enrico Tanuwidjaja expects the Bank of Thailand to cut its policy rate twice this year, by 0.25 points each in June and August, taking it from 2.50% to 2.0%. He cited low exports, high household debt, weak consumption and stable low inflation.
He said the cuts would put short-term pressure on the baht.
Lower Thai rates would weaken the baht, raising the cost of imported feed for Thai livestock and poultry producers. The global price effect is limited.
