The USDA Grain Transportation Report of August 22, 2024 says the Canadian lockouts do not directly affect CN and CPKC U.S. operations but still affect U.S. grain logistics. It notes that Canada is a major fertilizer supplier that ships largely by rail and the leading destination for U.S. ethanol, about 75 percent of which moves by rail.
It also reports that 64 percent of U.S. DDGS exports in the first half of 2024 left through four customs districts.
Rail disruption to fertilizer and ethanol flows can raise input and freight costs and reduce DDGS and corn demand through cross-border channels. The effect on feed prices depends on how long the stoppage lasts.
