The University of Queensland is developing a method to turn organic waste biogas into microbial single-cell protein as a fishmeal alternative. Feeding trials with fish have not yet produced published results.
Other studies cited by UQ found such proteins can replace up to 75% of fishmeal in barramundi diets.
A viable fishmeal substitute would ease demand for wild-catch and traditional fishmeal in aquafeed, but the technology is still unproven at commercial scale, so near-term price impact is minimal.
