Agricultural Research Council scientists modelled shifting 10% of the area of six South African crops into newly suitable zones under future climate scenarios. The benefit-cost ratio was about 1.5 for maize and citrus and about 1.41 for sorghum, with the study treating the 10% shift as a modelling assumption.
The study is a long-term planning analysis with no immediate supply effect, so it has little direct price impact. It does suggest South African maize and sorghum production may shift regionally as the climate warms.
