Vietnam's State Treasury has bought large amounts of US dollars from commercial banks as the dong strengthened. The latest purchase was a spot trade of up to US$100 million on September 12, with payment due September 16.
This was the third such purchase announced this year.
Treasury dollar buying signals official intervention to stabilise the currency, which keeps Vietnamese import costs for feed more predictable. The purchase is small relative to global commodity markets.
