Grain Workers Union Local 333 went on strike at Vancouver on September 24 after a 72-hour notice and failed talks. Canada's largest port handles about 52% of the country's grain, and the Grain Growers association estimated the stoppage could hold up about 100,000 metric tons daily.
Its estimated cost was about $26 million per day.
Losing about 100,000 tonnes a day of Pacific-bound grain capacity tightens near-term supply to Asian buyers and can lift freight and competing origin prices. Limited alternative corridors make the export impact harder to offset.
