The American Farm Bureau reports that HPAI has affected over 100 million poultry since 2022, with egg layers and turkeys hit hardest. Broiler flocks have been less affected, although two California broiler flocks with 1.5 million birds were recently detected.
The January-September 2024 average retail egg price was $2.99 per dozen, up 7% from 2023.
Egg layer and turkey losses reduce domestic supply and keep egg and turkey prices volatile. Broiler detections are a minor risk to chicken supply, so the effect on feed demand is limited.
