Wholesale large-egg prices in the Midwest reached $5.57 per dozen on Wednesday, up 150% from a year earlier and above the previous record of $5.46 from December 2022. Bird flu has killed about 123 million poultry since 2022, and nearly half of the 35 million commercial laying hens lost this year were infected in the past three months.
Losses to the laying flock tighten egg supply, pushing wholesale egg prices to records. Egg prices do not directly move feed grain or meal prices, so the effect on feed markets is limited.
