UK feed wheat futures for May-25 closed at £180.40/t on 26 February. AHDB reports that the malting barley premium over feed fell to an average of £19.20/t in December, from £24.60/t in November and £66.70/t a year earlier.
Brewing, malting and distilling usage in July to December 2024 was down 7.6% year on year.
Ample UK malting barley supply and weaker brewing demand keep the malting premium under pressure, which lowers returns for growers and reduces the incentive to hold malting-quality grain.
