The rupee closed at 85.98 per dollar, its best day in two months, after a sharp rally in Indian equities and fresh foreign inflows. It logged its biggest weekly gain in more than two years and was the top-performing Asian currency in March 2025.
The move was also helped by dollar inflows and unwinding of speculative long-dollar bets.
A stronger rupee makes Indian rice and meal offers more expensive for overseas buyers, which can slow export demand. Traders should watch whether the rally holds, since it affects Indian export competitiveness.
