Oklahoma State Extension economist Derrell Peel reviewed regional feeder cattle prices for the first three weeks of April, using 500-pound M/L No. 1 steers. Nebraska averaged a high of $410.01/cwt and Mississippi a low of $362.66/cwt, a spread of about 11.5 percent.
He tied the regional differences to local supply and to cattle moving toward concentrated feedlots in the Plains.
Regional feeder price spreads show where cattle supply is tight and where it is moving to feedlots, which affects feed demand in those areas. The prices reported are high by historical standards, which supports the cost of finishing cattle.
