A desktop study led by consultant Geoff Niethe calculated breakeven prices for feeding cottonseed and other protein meals to weaners and heifers in the Northern Territory. Supplementing weaners was profitable up to $678/t at 350c/kg liveweight, and heifer supplementation up to $696/t at the same price.
The breakeven thresholds show how much cottonseed meal Northern Territory cattle producers can afford, which affects local demand for protein meals. The impact on global prices is small.
