Signal Ocean reports that severe rainfall and flooding in the Hunter River area, after debris disrupted operations, has pushed congestion at Newcastle, Australia's largest thermal coal port, to levels not seen since early 2022. Vessel queues peaked above 40 ships as of May 27.
The congestion is centered on thermal coal rather than grain, so its direct impact on feed commodity prices is limited, though it tightens Panamax and Post-Panamax vessel availability in the Pacific.
