On March 17, Mexico's President Claudia Sheinbaum signed a constitutional reform banning the cultivation of genetically modified corn. The move followed a December USMCA trade tribunal ruling in favor of a US complaint against Mexico's 2023 decree restricting GM corn in tortillas.
Mexico complied by rescinding three import-related parts of the decree, but kept the glyphosate phase-out, the GM corn import tracking protocol and the cultivation ban.
Mexico, the largest buyer of US corn, is keeping domestic GM corn planting restricted while easing import limits, which supports steady demand for US corn imports. The price effect is modest because the ban affects domestic production rather than trade volumes directly.
After 318 past bullish policy events, Corn moved a median -0.1% over 5 sessions (48% higher; middle half -1.4% to +1.5%), and -0.2% over 20.
