USDA launched an $8.5 million sterile screwworm fly dispersal facility in South Texas and unveiled a five-pronged plan to detect, control and eliminate the pest. The announcement followed detections in Mexico as far north as Oaxaca and Veracruz, about 700 miles from the U.S. border.
The plan aims to protect the domestic livestock industry.
Stronger eradication efforts lower the risk of a U.S. outbreak that would cut cattle supplies further, so the impact on cattle prices is mainly through reduced tail risk.
After 69 past neutral disease events, Live Cattle moved a median -0.1% over 5 sessions (42% higher; middle half -0.8% to +0.6%), and +0.9% over 20.
