US natural gas futures rose about 1% on Thursday after a smaller-than-expected EIA storage build of 23 bcf for the week ended July 18. Forecasts for the hottest weather in three years were expected to lift power-sector gas burn early the following week.
Heat-driven power burn and a tighter storage build support near-term gas prices, which feeds into energy costs for feed mills and ethanol and DDGS producers.
After 221 past bullish weather events, NATGAS moved a median +3.3% over 5 sessions (61% higher; middle half -5.2% to +14.0%), and -0.3% over 20.
